Tour des Ecrins GR54

The GR54 is undoubtedly one of the finest long distance mountain walks in Europe!

The Parc National des Ecrins is the largest and highest national park in France and the area it covers, the Massif des Ecrins, one of the most challenging of alpine environments. The area boasts majestic snow-capped mountains, tumbling glaciers and steep-sided alpine valleys all linked by the GR54 long distance footpath. The GR54 carves a circular route through and around these mountains and is considered to be one of the toughest multi-day treks in Europe. That said, the trail is clearly defined and well maintained and no technical skills are required although some scrambling ability, sure-footedness and a reasonable head for heights will all come in useful.

Technical Facts: The complete circuit takes 10-12 days but we also offer shorter 6-day variants taking in the southern and eastern sections (from Vallouise to Bourg d'Oisans) or the northern section (from Venosc to Vallouise).

Complete Trek: 176km long, with 12800m total ascent over 14 high cols. Shorter Treks: 100km, with 8200m total ascent over 9 cols.

Accommodation: We stay in remote mountain refuges or village gites where hot showers and good food are available; sleeping is in small rooms and dormitories.

This is a strenuous trek with days covering over 15-20km distance with 1200m ascents but is open to all fit and adventurous walkers. However, the group size will be small (4-6 persons). Dates 2019: July to Sept (tbc)
